back in the day...

who rmbrs when TicTacs were ACTUALLY orange- now replaced by cheap orange tinted boxes...   I'm starting to get those glimpses at being the 'older generation'- when I was talking to a 13yr old the other day and I was commenting on how TicTacs used to be orange...he gave me this blank stare....and said, 'TicTacs were never orange...they were always white..". 'Well....' I replied, 'back in MY day...'
Haha...but time really does go by quickly, eh? Went to a girlfriend's bday dinner tonight and saw so many good friends from high school... *sigh*  I really think that most of my closest friends were from the good high school days, when things were still sweet and simple.  Somehow, even though all of us have moved on to different places [geographically and emotionally], we all return to that more simple world and personalities when we get together.  Sure, we've moved on from the cups of slurpies in the hallway to opening bottles of wine at fancy restaurants, but when we chat, we can really pour our hearts out and it seems as if not a day has gone by.
And in many ways, were we not more easily satisfied in those days?  My friend and I commented on how we miss the good ol' high school days, when, having a single slow dance w/ a girl/guy that you might have a 'crush' on @ the cheesy dance could keep u up all night and when chapter tests in chemistry replaced the worries of job seeking and financial worries of today.
Ahh...it's always a wonderful reminder of the friendships that you have developed and the more genuine, childish side of yourself...

embarassing

If you've ever had a chance to work in the service industry which includes taking phone calls, you may have had the experience of receiving calls from ppl who are desperate for some help  but in the end found out that they actually did sth completely foolish.
You know, like those times that ppl call about their computer not working and the cause was b/c they didn't plug it in ... or those odd times when patients mistake their suppositories for oral therapy...
I guess those unfortunate souls always become some punchline for a comedian, or for a good laugh among colleagues...
I, sad to say, became one of those 'idiots' who called in worried sick abt sth...and it all spurred from my baking...

So here I was, happily baking my sour cream-choco-coffee cake w/ steusel topping, and enjoying a nice glass of wine and some soothing music when I 'discovered' that the oven has a 'lock' mechanism.  It's similar to that of a dishwasher- you know, the slide lock function.  Perhaps it was the wine, but I thought to myself, 'hey! this is a pretty smart addition... it'll keep kids from burning themselves when the meatloaf's cooking'... [now that I think back...why should I care about kids running around?! ]
Anyhow, so I locked the oven while baking my cake and went back to making my second batch...
...10 minutes later I start to smell the aroma of coffee and chocolate and decide that I should probably check on my 'baby' when i discovered that...I COULDN'T OPEN THE OVEN DOOR!!!!
So then, of course, the dilemma was between turning the oven off and hoping that my cake won't be burned on the outside and runny on the inside by the time I got the darned thing open; or keeping it on until my cake was finished baking, but worrying that I won't be able to get it out.
Great! I'm a genius!... so I panicked, and panicked some more... and then *light bulb goes on* I see the 'GE' logo on my oven and decide to look for their customer service line online...
[now the embarassing part]
So when I finally got through to a wonderful lady operator and explained to her my very highly embarassing situation, she told me casually that when locked, the oven thinks that it is in it's 'self cleaning' mode and will therefore need to cool down before it will automatically unlock itself.
In the end, she even wished me luck that my baking didn't burn...
Wow... I never knew that GE had ovens that sensed their own temp and controlled their lock mechanism...   I guess that's why they're still the leading company in family electronics in NA...
Of course after the phone call, I wanted to dive into a hole and might as well have worn a badge that says, 'hi! my name is idiot,. nice to meet you'

haha.... but I guess to keep it a happy ending, my baking didn't get ruined

the beauty of it all

http://homepage.mac.com/gapodaca/digital/blonde/blonde1.html

A friend sent me this website as a study break laugh...

I already knew most of the pics in magazines were cuts and clips of multiple parts of multiple women put together, but even little 'touch-ups' can really add another screen on top of all that makeup.

At first I found the 'reality' pictures to be quite amusing, but i guess a thought ran across my mind as I looked over at some of my own pictures on my desk of when I was younger...

[most] Women are always blindly chasing after something they can never achieve; and this type of photo-shop enhancement really doesnt help the cause.  Most people think women are hardest on themselves when they look at pictures of other women and compare.  That's why all throughout highschool and all over the internet on those anti-anorexia sites, they always mention how only 8% of the world's women really look like those pictures.

I, however, feel that women are most critical when they compare pictures of themselves over the years.  Unless you were one of those 'super jenny craig i-lost-200-lbs' ppl, then chances are you've gone through yo-yo periods of weight-gain/loss, you've gained some 'lines of wisdom' (aka wrinkles) and even your face starts to sag...

but...Can you imagine being one of the 'lucky' ones... part of the 8% of world population who do have the supermodel bodies... and then you go and take some model shoots and when you look at them (post-photoshop) you realize that no matter how 'perfect' you thought you were....you're still heck of a long way from that beauty on the cover.  What an utterly depressing thought...

Would we really stop buying all those vogue magazines or stop wearing designer clothing simply b/c the models on the cover looked normal?  It reminded me of the time I went to a certain ladies-chain clothing store to buy sth, and the salesgirl told me proudly how they didn't sell anything bigger than an XS... but at the same time, I see all these girls trying the clothing on who definitely were NOT an XS...but still fit the clothing.  So what do they really do? Enlarge the parameters of the sizing so I'd feel better that I wear an XS instead of a medium? hahahaha... [I still bought the pair of pants in the end...but I would've done the same even if they were tagged the taboo 'L' ]

feaster easter

was originally gonna take the family out for easter dinner, but decided to buy and cook it instead... haha- i was told that it's good that i'm not a housewife- considering I took 2.5 hours to get all the ingredients and i tend to neglect the prices
was really worried when i opened the oven and all this smoke came gushing out ... [found out later that it was the wax paper playing tricks on me...]
After 2 hours of choppin, spicin and cookin, finally got my Easter Feaster on the table:
the starter: oven fresh garlic bread
the soupe: jardin a la squash...
the salade: baby spinach w/ honey dijon, golden raisins, toasted crisps & almond slices
the works: sauteed tomatoes, zuchinis & nugget red potatoes
the main: apple-pineapple-honey baked ham [never tried cooking w/ apple before...but it's actually REALLY good...hint of swtness but with an interesting texture- definitely adds another dimention to conventional honey roasted ham]
the vin: woodbridge merlot 03... usually i really don't like red wine... but this one isn't too bad.  Didn't think I was ever going to open it at first, but exceeded my expectations...
the dessert: apple pie a-la-monde
... so i said to my family..., 'k, i may not be the best ' housewife', not that i was looking to be one anyways, but at least I can cook for the important dates... and the picture can be a bonus in case i need to do some self-promotion someday...'

which brings me to a funny letter I got in the mail from some company called superdating or sth like that...included is a form w/ a postage-paid envelope [these guys are serious! haha] and it's meant for 'ppl who are looking for that serious relationship in their lives...trying to find true love' hahaha....and there's a survey inside asking for the demographics/qualities you have and what you're looking for.  I was ALMOST tempted to send it back with some interesting qualities...how's ex-con or super agent FBI...or maybe super rich 65 lookin for a poolboy ? hey, but at least I can cook?
